units.
How much is a unit?
- a pint of standard lager, beer, cider – 2.3 units
- a pint of strong lager, beer, cider – 2.8 units
- a glass of spirits (25ml) – 1 unit
- a 175ml glass of wine – 2 units
- a 250ml glass of wine – 3 units
- a glass of spirits (25ml) – 1 unit
- bottle of alcopops – 1.4 units
- a bottle of wine – 10 units
What if I drink more?
If you regularly drink more than
two to three units a day, you have an increased risk of high blood pressure,
heart attack and mouth and throat cancer. In 2008, there were 4,764 deaths in
England and Wales due to alcoholic liver disease, one quarter of which were in
women.
Drinking more than the recommended limit is also linked to:
- depression
- dementia
- heart disease
- liver disease
- stroke
- increased risks of some types of cancer, including cancer of the breast
Cutting down could reduce your risk.

recommended, reducing your drinki ng to bring it back within the sensible limits
