January 1st Africa Borama's councilors on Tuesday elected a new chairman and his deputy to lead the local council affairs after days of controversy over the recent municipal elections in the region.
The ten-member council elected Hussein Idle Barqadle as the council chairman and Sa’ad Dahir Ige as his deputy at a session in Sayla’ town. The elected officials were immediately sworn-in.
Several top Somaliland officials including ministers attended the event.
Speaking to Media, Education assistant minister Ali Hamud Jibril welcomed the new council officials and called it a step forward in ending controversies surrounding the election of the council members.
The outcome of the recently held municipal elections in the region sparked a two day protest in Borama. One person was killed and four others sustained injuries during the Borama riots.
